What "Skilled" Means in the Norwegian Construction Tariff
The Norwegian construction allmenngjøring distinguishes between "skilled" (faglært) and "unskilled" (ufaglært) workers — and the wage gap is significant. Skilled carpenters get NOK 264.32/h. Unskilled with experience get NOK 249.00/h. Unskilled with no experience get NOK 239.61/h. Over a full year that gap is roughly €4,200 in your favour. "Skilled" is a legal category, not a feeling about your own competence: you must have a recognized formal qualification.
How to Get Your EU Qualification Recognized
- Identify your home-country qualification — Polish "tytuł zawodowy", Czech "vyuceni list", Latvian "profesionālā kvalifikācija", or equivalent
- Apply to NOKUT for recognition (godkjenning) — submit diploma, transcript, certified translations, and proof of identity
- NOKUT compares your qualification to the Norwegian fagbrev — most EU vocational construction diplomas are equivalent
- A decision typically takes a few months — you can begin work as unskilled in the meantime
- Once recognized, you legally qualify for the skilled tariff and your contract should be updated
Alternative Routes If You Have No Diploma
If you trained on the job and never received a formal certificate, Norway offers a "praksiskandidatordningen" — a practical-candidate route where you can take the fagbrev exam directly after documenting at least 5 years of relevant work experience. This is how many older EU carpenters formally upgrade once they are already working in Norway. Your employer or recruitment agency can help with the paperwork.
